What is a worm's job?
What
do you need to know? You need to know important facts about soil
and plants to understand the worm's job!
What
is soil? Soil is the top layer of earth, covering the hard
rocks beneath, from which plants can draw their food. It is made
up of a mixture of mineral substances (sand, clay, chalk) and decayed
animal and vegetable matter. The differences in soils are caused
by the different mixtures of these things. Good growing soil
always contains plenty of organic matter (matter which was once part
of a living thing, a plant or animal). At certain times of the
year, farmers put manure or compost
(rotted-down leaves and stems) on their fields to keep the soil rich
and easy to work. Practice identifying soil types using the
Soil
Texture Key. Click here to view the steps in a Soil
Identification experiment.
